Upgrades that are worth doing
Putting a solid-state drive into a machine that still has a spinning one is the single biggest improvement available to most older computers, and it costs a fraction of a replacement. More memory is the other one. Beyond those two, the honest advice is often to put the money toward a new machine instead, and we will say so.
Moving to a new computer
- Files, folders and everything sitting loose on the desktop
- Mail, including the history and the account settings
- Browser bookmarks, saved passwords and logins
- Software reinstalled and licensed, where the licence allows it
- Printers and devices connected again
- The old machine wiped properly if you are passing it on
Before the old one dies, ideally
Migration is far easier while the old machine still turns on. It is still possible afterwards, and we do that job often, but it costs more and some things do not survive. If your current computer is making noises or refusing to start, that is the moment to move rather than the moment to wait and see.

- Yes. Plenty of people buy the machine and have us do the setup and the migration.
- What about Windows 10 machines that are out of support?
- Some will run the current version and some will not, and it depends on the hardware rather than the age. We can tell you which yours is.
