Cloud solutions

Moving to the cloud is worth doing when it removes a problem you actually have. It is not worth doing because it is what everyone says to do, and it is a poor fix for a bad internet connection.

What usually moves, and why

  • Mail, so it stops living on one machine under somebody's desk
  • Files, so staff working from home are editing the same version as the office
  • Line-of-business applications, where the vendor supports a hosted option
  • Some servers, where the hardware is due for replacement anyway and the numbers work

What we check before recommending it

Your internet connection is the first thing. Moving everything offsite when the line into the building is marginal turns a working office into a slow one, and no amount of cloud fixes that. We look at the connection before the migration, not after.

The second is what your applications actually support. Some software simply runs better on a machine in the building, and we will say so rather than move it to make a project look modern.

Migrations without the lost weekend

Cutovers happen out of hours where they can, mail is moved with its history intact, and old systems stay available until the new arrangement has proven itself. Nobody should arrive on Monday to find eight years of mail missing.

Questions we get asked

Is the cloud cheaper?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. It converts a large occasional purchase into a monthly cost, which suits some businesses and not others. We will show you the comparison for your situation rather than assert one.
Can we move some things and not others?
Yes, and most businesses end up that way. Mail and files in the cloud with a server still in the building is a common and perfectly sensible arrangement.
Who owns the data?
You do. If you ever leave us, your data leaves with you and we will help you take it.
